I was doing the "steam" talk by the New York Safety engine and a young girl (late 20s) I would guess was asking really in dept good questions. After answering several I looked at her and said "you must be an engineer" She had a big smile and said yes.
As to what Dave Caldwall said as to females and the big engines it is often the ladies that are the most inquisitive.

Dave,
I don't think we need to apologize or be at a loss. One thing we have for women is big steam engines. Also, a lot of wireless stuff and tons of history. We had carloads of women who are engineers, one woman who is a honcho in IEEE who volunteers at the gate every year, several mothers who were guiding their daughters (and sons) through the scavenger hunt, and a bunch of girls who were determined to key their names in Morse Code. Play to our strengths!

I took a few Steam-up flyers to the Glocester, RI Senior Center last week and at least one person from there came to Steam-up. One gal (not a "senior") asked me what there was for women. I didn't have a good answer. She was wondering about arts & crafts vendors, etc. That is next weekend in North Scituate.
There was a very good turn-out in the Wireless bldg. I tried recruiting a very knowledgeable radio guy, but he is still in high school and can't come on Thursdays. He did give me his business card! This was not his first Steam-up.
All in all, a great day!

Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for their parts in what was a great day for all! There are of course all of the tasks that we talked about in the meetings and all, but I also noticed little things that people knew to do instinctively, and those things are particularly helpful. As noted in another message from Terry, it looks like we had around 800 admissions. At one point the parking field was full and we had to put a few cars down in the front lot. Thankfully the early crowd started to leave and open up spots for new visitors. I'd say that gives us a sense of capacity.
I did hear lots of positive comments from people, and not a single negative one. I spoke to one visitor who absolutely loved the presentations, and I was happy to see them so well attended. We did restore some functionality to the PA system on Friday, but I don't know if it was used or not, as I never heard any announcements. Another visitor said that it was already obvious there was "a changing tide" or something of that nature there at the museum. I don't know what he might have been referring to as I don't think we've changed too much just yet, but perhaps this in my own inside perspective blinding me. It was a positive thing in any case. I also spoke briefly to Gene Valicenti who said that he had plugged us twice on his morning radio show on Friday. Any way you slice it, it was a great day, and again, I thank you all.
We've had some good feedback here, but let's plan for a wrap-up meeting on Thursday so I can take some notes and hear more about what worked well, or what we could improve for next year. Between the binder that Lou had created, and notes from Suzy, Tim, Steve the food guy, and everyone, we're keeping a pretty good record of instructions and supplies. I'd just like to add to that as our foundation for next year.
