[Thursday] Air compressor

The compressor could go very easily at the southwest corner of the shop.
We could pipe it directly through the wall to the steam piping at the
Columbia boiler. The only drawback being the blockage of that area to
drive any significant vehicle through. I think that will work great
temporarily, but we may find a better long-term location. The Columbia
itself may never need to operate again as I believe the compressor exceeds
the purpose for which the Columbia was installed. That might be viable.
The garden shed may also be a reasonable location, either temporarily or
more permanently. We should take some measurements and think on it a bit
more. A line through the wall from the Columbia boiler room will be very
easy, and will serve multiple uses even if the compressor use is just
temporary.

Whatever exhibit of work we could put out by the boiler would certainly
need to be safe. Some sort of water feature would be very safe, but we
also need to make it interesting. Another thought might be to extend a
line shaft from either the shop or from the existing shaft in the steam
building, and power it with one of those outdoor engines while having an
exhibit inside. That might encourage people to follow the shaft on to the
next spot and get a better idea of how the power was actually transmitted
and utilized. In thinking about this, I considered extending that shaft
out through the front of the building as well for possible connection to
another exhibit there. The lathe and mill in the shop might make a
reasonable display too, setting them up to be run from a line shaft for
steam up, and switched back to electric power easily for use otherwise.
Any use of belts becomes a little dangerous too, so that needs to be
considered. We could possibly couple a hydraulic pump to an engine to
create a more typical hydraulic log splitter, although it's quite a bit
less visual than line shafting would be. I think it's a location to make a
great impression on people, and we should try to create something visually
and mechanically interesting.
