[Thursday] Air compressor

Lou,
Those reciprocating wood splitters are very dangerous to the operator and surrounding spectators.
Also the wood has to be cut to almost exactly the same length for it to work properly.
Your earlier suggestion of a water pump would be equally entertaining to our spectators and not dangerous. Especially since we have a neat one up in the attic of the shop. Randy and I have already discussed this and I will be looking into belting it up the Erie City engine by the big boiler as soon as I get the windows installed in the Mayes Building.

Randy,
I believe there are
reciprocating wood splitters that would be perfect for
demonstrations. One could be set up with a small engine from
the Steam Bld'g in the area where the engines are next
to the boiler. ( move the engines elsewhere ). I'll
think some more on it and get back to you.

great news about the air compressor.
How about a
shelter at the southwest side of the shop with an
underground air line over to the boiler where the compressor
was connected previously......Like the one we have for the
steam tables.

I'm happy to announce that
the museum has acquired an air compressor, as
planned, capable of powering any of the engines
for demonstration. We have
a little work
to do, deciding on an appropriate place for it and getting
it
connected to the steam piping. I
don't imagine that will take long, and
it's already been given some thought.
For the sake of interest,
it's a Kaeser M50 that puts out 185cfm, and is in
great shape. I think it'll be a great
asset for us for decades to come!
