After freeing up all the switches, lubricating etc I started to check the
electrical operation of this tube tester. Considering it had been flooded
at one time and had a lot of corrosion the inside looked pretty good.
However the filament for one of the rectifier tubes (the type 83 mercury
vapor rectifier) was on 2 volts and insufficient to fire the Gas vapor. So
I replaced it with a solid state plug in. After cleaning the switches (but
have not cleaned all of them) it showed signs of life. The bias voltmeter
is open and does not read bias voltage settings.
Replacement might be had for about 80 bucks or I could get a littleL ED
0-100 VDC module (for a $1.88 each) and mount it in the meter case. Since
this unit is only for our use in testing museum tubes it might be the way
to go. It is a very versatile tube tester for testing vintage tubes and
since this is a Hickok 539B made for Western Electric (I found the chart
inside for test setups for ALL Western Electric tubes which is kinda nice
to have and will have a copy made) it is a very nice and very well made
tube tester. Tha my report. on this item. Rob.
