 I have a DVD set of history of flying. One segment showed early WWI aerial reconnaissance over enemy lines. The pilot would use wireless to send info back to HQ using a Morse code key mounted on the outside of the fuselage. The pilot just stuck his hand out of the open cockpit and operated the key. Hopefully he didn't get zapped too many times!
