All,
Steam Up is now less than a month away.
Will you be attending as an active volunteer? If so please let us know. info at newsm.org
Museum preparations are progressing well.
For those of you that haven't been at the museum lately we think you will be impressed with the ongoing improvements.
Below are just a few of the many projects that have been completed or are ongoing at this time.
The first stage of the Mayes building renovations are nearing completion.
Many signage improvements in the Wireless building and Station PJ are in place.
The radio restoration shop in the south east corner of the wireless building is nearing basic completion, so the actual repair shop benches etc can be installed. This includes a new sheet-rock ceiling and heat/air-conditioning.
The 1911 William Harris engine has had many repairs and was run again for the first time in many years
The Improved Greene Engine, 1897 has had its governor rebuilt and it will now run for display at a reduced governed speed. This is neat as you can actually watch the governor control admission valve cut off.
The 1892 William Harris engine has had the first stage of cleaning so it can be painted.
The Delameter Iron Works Steam Engine, c. 1870 has also been cleaned and we found out it doesn't need painting. The paint is almost perfect.
This cleaning/painting project will eventually include all the engines and artifacts in the Steam Building.
The Corliss piston rod seal which had leaked badly for many years has been repaired. It is amazing how easily and economically the engine runs and how easily it starts with good pressure on both sides of the piston. Economically you say??? Last Saturday when it was run we could just barely keep it running. Yesterday after completing this repair when the engine was running pressure was slowly increasing not decreasing. Meaning that we now have ample pressure and volume to run the engine without the big piston rod leak.
Please reply if you will be attending as a volunteer. info at newsm.org
If you will be attending as a visitor we will look forward to seeing you.
Thanks
Ernie Darrow
