That does look like fun. I'm sure I have a spare coil around.Of course they can develop a lot of current if fed with the right voltage.
Here is a simple demonstration that explains the utility of a coherer and howit is able to detect a spark gap transmission.The demonstration shows how to make a coherer out of some bolts, iron filings, and plastic tubing.It also shows how to make a very safe spark transmitter from a barbecue igniter.Very well done and accessible to even young museum visitors.
