Hi Everyone,
Chris has been gracious enough to volunteer as one of the speakers for the
upcoming discussion evening for this month, on Wednesday the 19th. The
topic is to be centered around electrical evaluation, repair, and tuning of
an antique radio. Some discussion around the museum on Thursday got me to
thinking about a parallel that could be developed into an exhibit for the
museum. Perhaps someone else could explain the very basics of how radio
works in the first place. Admittedly, this isn't my field. Chris gave me
an overview of the radio stages and such, but still, from a layman's
perspective, it doesn't tell me how it works. Could someone else come up
with some diagrams, or something of the sort to spell it out in a simple
method?
This all comes to mind as a benefit to our visitors too. Obviously we
can't flesh out an exhibit in the next 19 days, but conceptually I think
the museum could use something of this nature. We've had some discussions
about who our visitors are, and what we need to be doing to interest them.
Decades ago I'm sure many of the visitors were folks who had some knowledge
of mechanics and radio. Hobbyists, engineers, enthusiasts, and people who
worked in the respective fields. People today have less and less
familiarity from their daily lives, and we're hoping to appeal to
students. The short story is, we should start working on some exhibits
that educate visitors on how the things in our collection work. Diagrams
might help, perhaps there are YouTube videos out there already we could use
or gather ideas from, and undoubtedly some physical demonstrations. We
could start down the road for this particular Engaging Evening, and then
continue it into something permanent.
Thanks,
--
