[Thursday] WLW History

In the past when I did tours in the Wireless building, I would cover The Crosley Corp and WLW pointing out the transmitting tube and discussing some of Crosley's history. In the 1920's, Powel Crosley Jr founded Crosley Radio Corp because he felt radios were far too expensive for most people and he developed and sold low cost radios. Later, they also made expensive radios as well, of course.

Prior to 1945, Crosley Radio Corp was one of the largest company's in the US . Besides WLW and radio manufacturing, they built "Shelvador" refrigerators (a friend still uses one in their kitchen), highly collectable compact cars and even airplanes. Crosley also owned the Cincinnati Reds baseball team.

If you want to read more about the Crosley family and business,  I recommend you read "Crosley: Two Brothers and a Business Empire That Transformed the Nation"  ISBN-10: 1578603226.  This is one of the most interesting books I've ever read.

Guys,
As discussed in our small group today, there was a fascinating excerpt from a magazine that had been sitting on a table in the Mayes building for a while that I had read.  It was about the growth of the radio station WLW from a home hobby-type endeavor to the most powerful transmitter in the country.  We have one of the tubes from this transmitter in the wireless building, sitting there with very little mention of its history.  Here is a quick link to an article I found, although it's not the one I had read before, nor have I had the time to go through this one.  There are also YouTube video tours of the facility that still contains a great deal of the equipment built for this 500kW station.  This is just one example of the great deal of history we have artifacts of, but no good presentation or explanation for visitors to learn from or appreciate. This story also ties into all of our Crosley radios as well.
