I am reaching out to maritime sites to inquire if you’d be interested in
the transfer of an artifact from our collection – the Steam Tug Baltimore,
1906. We are looking for a new home for the ST Baltimore. The ST Baltimore
is the oldest coal fired steam tug in the US. As much as we’d like to keep
her, we realize we are not the best place for her. The volunteer corps who
once managed her maintenance has moved on and the staff here is not
equipped to handle a living artifact. We are looking to transfer her to
another entity that has a maritime focus and can do a better job in telling
her unique story. The tug came to us in 1981, was restored, and ran for a
number of years, operated and maintained by a large volunteer corps. She
comes with a complete log and supporting documents of maintenance history,
photographs, etc., plus a shipping container full of material to support
her care. She is a National Historic Landmark. Steam enthusiasts relish her
as an early 20th century steam powered boiler operation. The ST Baltimore
on the East Coast, and the ST Hercules (NPS) on the West Coast are
considered to be the foremost examples of steam tugboat history. The best
general description of the ST Baltimore is on our website.
